RELEVANT HISTORY OF EMPLOYMENT
Design Engineering of High Precision Components
Consulting Engineering of High Precision Components/Assemblies
- Provided design, technology expertise for turbomachinery high speed seals, bearings and associated components; developed successful main bearings for both military and extended-life civil aircraft Auxiliary Power Units and high speed reduction drives, including integration with rotor dynamics
- Procured, utilized most major state-of-the-art bearing computer programs
Research and Development Project Management
- Designed long life main bearings for large, new industrial turbine engine
- Led resolution of bearing, rotor dynamic problems of high speed, tempera- ture turbine blade rub rig then identified, implemented new instrumentation
- Designed 150,000 rpm hybrid bearings for turbojet engine using full bearing system heat transfer analysis technique developed earlier; hybrid bearings for 100,000 rpm turboalternator, bearings for 50,000 rpm abrasive cleaning tool
- Successfully ran grease-lubed all-ceramic bearings at up to 130,000 rpm
Quality Control Procedure Writing and Inspection/Evaluation
- Started up bearing, lubrication, seal R&D activities, for company, government-funded research of hybrid and all-ceramic bearings, water-lubed bearings, seals
- Designed and built extensively instrumented 65,000, 110,000 and 130,000 rpm bearing, oil/fuel, mist lube systems and rotor dynamics investigation test rigs
- Established good relationships with all US, EU aerospace bearing manufacturers
Failure Analysis and Corrective Action Development
- Blade rub test facility improved for ISO 9000-series specifications compliance
- Derived bearing procurement, QA, after-run specifications including ceramics
- Assessed deviations in bearings for acceptability, findings used later in design
- Led investigations of turbomachinery bearing and seal defects and failures
- With Continuous Improvement teamwork increased auxiliary power unit main bearing life from under 2500 to over 6,000 hours
